A total of 287 participants and carers attended the event at the Knysna Primary School on Tuesday, July 2, with nine APD centres - Calitzdorp, Oudtshoorn, George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Kranshoek and The Crags - participating.
The game of Boccia is an accredited game presented at the Paralympics Games and is fast becoming very popular. The match is started with a white target ball or the 'jack' in the playing area. The player rolls the first Boccia ball as close as possible to the jack. The athletes use their hands, feet or an assistive device where required, to propel the balls. Thereafter the opposing team throws until they get a ball closer to the jack or until they have thrown all of their team's balls.
Andrew Johnson from Sonop, Kranshoek won Category A, while Derek and Gertruida Dickson team Epilepsy SA, Knysna won Category B.
Once the official games were played, the other members had a chance to play. Everyone was cheered on by MC Nicolas Njozela, principal of Percy Mdala High School, who has been most supportive of the event over the years. The day was ended on a high when Knysna's executive mayor, Georlene Wolmarans, visited the event to congratulate the winners.
"This one day, one event, tells each participant you are worthy and yes you can! We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives. The success and joy this day holds for the participants can only become a reality with the support of Department of Culture and Sport, Pick n Pay and team Worldsport. We thank you!" De Bruin concluded.
