This time, three talented boxers from Knysna excelled at the South African National Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) Youth & Elite National Boxing Championships that took place from 6 to 8 July in Tzaneen, Limpopo.
The boxers are Likhona Mazele (Percy Mdala High School), Anathi Mbalo and Lilitha Mzazi who is enrolled at the George Community Learning Centre, all of who took part in the youth divisions. The trio brought home a total of three medals - two silver and one gold.
17-year-old Lilitha, who took part in the Middleweight Division (71-75kg), fought two fights. The young boxer won his first fight by unanimous decision and, although he lost his second fight, went on to take home a silver medal.
In the Featherweight Division (54-57kg), 17-year-old Likhona too fought two fights. He won the first fight by technical knockout (TKO) and subsequently lost his second fight, receiving a silver medal in his division.
The 19-year-old Anathi fought one fight in the Bantamweight Division (68-70kg), going all three rounds and winning by unanimous decision. This secured her a gold medal as well as the accolade of national champion.
The trio's coach at Masiphakame, Vumza Yonzi, expressed his pride in their boxers. "They have trained very hard to earn these medals, and each one is very well deserved.
"We are very proud of these three boxers who excelled at nationals." Yonzi also extended a big thank you to Eden Boxing president Nkosikho Makhalima, who assisted them with travel arrangements, while Lilitha thanked staff members from Concordia High School who had helped fund his participation.Likhona Mazele and Lilitha Mzazi
