KNYSNA GOLF NEWS – The Knysna Golf Club Ashes Trophy completed its baker's dozen this year, as the 13th edition of the competition was held on Saturday 14 January.
With this year being the 13th Ashes Trophy, it bore some significance due to the fact that it was on 13 January 2010 that the Knysna Golf Club clubhouse was gutted by a fire.
The club lost all of its memorabilia, some of which was more than a century old, in the blaze, which originated from the club's boiler room.
But the club bounced back. By mid-2010 they had already started rebuilding the clubhouse and in April 2011 they officially reopened the new clubhouse facility.
Prior to this they had already held the first-ever Ashes Trophy in January 2011, and it has become a staple of the club's calendar year.
The weather was perfect for some fine golf to be played on Saturday 14 January. The format this year was better-ball bonus bogey, an intriguing competition format that forced golfers to think and play outside the box.
This did however lead to some great golf and close competition as a full field battled it out for top honours.
Ultimately, it was JP Lottering and Ben Kriga who finished in top spot, earning a score of +10. They defeated second-place Mike Beggs and Gibb Gibhard on a count-out and Ralph Stander and Krisjan Leen finished third on +9.
