RHEENENDAL NEWS - Hundreds of soccer players descended on Rheenendal this past weekend for an annual soccer festival that is held on the sports fields behind Totties Farm Kitchen by Sport at Backward Point.
Soccer is arguably the world's biggest sport, with billions of people around the world naming soccer as the sport of their choosing. It was, however, somewhat of a sleeping giant in the Knysna area until seven years ago when Sport at Backward Point decided to launch a soccer festival on their fields in Rheenendal.
The company had already been hosting annual cricket and hockey weeks and tournaments on the same fields, so the progression to hosting a soccer festival was only natural.
It was an instant hit, with schools from all over the Cape making the trip to take part in one of the largest age-group soccer festivals in the province.

The festival caters mainly for senior primary school players, and the latest edition was held in Rheenendal on 14 and 15 June with 21 teams in total taking part over the course of the two days. The festival is conducted as a friendly tournament, with there being no official scorekeeping or log, as the organisers' main aim is for the children to simply take part and have fun.
The participating schools do not bring their learners all the way to Rheenendal just for the tournament, but also make a trip out of it and take the children to see the sights in the area too.
