SOUTHERN CAPE FOOTBALL NEWS - The 2019/2020 Safa Eden Women's Regional League season finally got under way on Saturday 6 June with only three of the scheduled five matches played after two were cancelled due to the Plett protests.
Having started in 2009 as the Absa Women's Regional League, the SA Football Association (Safa) Regional Women's League has for years occupied a critical space in SA women's football development, whereby it acts as a feeder to the Sasol League and ultimately the senior national team, Banyana Banyana – if the player is good enough, of course.
The opening day of the newest season of the Eden District's league was scheduled to kick off with five matches being played across the district that would see all eight league teams in action – two matches were scheduled to be played in Plettenberg Bay, two in George, and one in Dysselsdorp.
The eight teams who will be competing for the coveted title of the best women's soccer team in the Southern Cape will include one from Plettenberg Bay – Lidz FC; two from Knysna – Southern Stars FC and Pine Stars FC; one from George – GG United; two from Mossel Bay – Peace Makers FC and Raising the Bar; and finally two teams from Oudtshoorn – Defence and Springroses.
The first day of the season would see the two matches scheduled to take place in Plett cancelled and moved to this coming weekend due to the protests that crippled the town last week. This meant that only three of the five matches were played last weekend, with GG United playing twice – against Raising the Bar and Peace Makers, and Springroses playing against Defence.
GG United managed to heavily dominate their two games, beating Raising the Bar 5-3 while crushing Peace Makers 10-0. Defence was able to sweep aside Springroses' home-ground advantage by defeating them 3-0.
The next round of fixtures other than the games rescheduled for this weekend will take place on Sunday 21 July, with all eight games to be played in Plett.
