KNYSNA NEWS - South Western Districts Cricket (SWDC) has recognised Kilt and the Knysna Sports Academy for their contributions to cricket development in the greater Knysna area.
The Knysna Sports Academy hosted the Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching's (Kilt) after-school programme, which has a hugely positive impact on Knysna's children. Cricket and rugby are among the activities included in the project.
The project allows primary school children to improve their sport skills. After school hours, the project provides a safe and enjoyable environment for children.
This project also ensures the establishment of well-planned, long-term support structures to keep youth from abusing drugs and substances and committing crimes.
Sport has been shown to teach learners life skills such as leadership, patience, and teamwork effort - an important factor in today's education.
Interim cricket services manager for SWDC, Garry Hampson thanked the Knysna Sports Academy, on behalf of SWD Cricket, for its continued commitment to the development of cricket in the greater Knysna region.
"The work over the years continues and with the Kilt programme being managed by KSA, you are bringing further opportunities to young people's lives in both boys' and girls' cricket, giving them access to this beautiful game," he said.
"This is one of the key objectives of Cricket South Africa's vision statement. Through these opportunities, young peoples' lives will be changed for the better and wonderful life lessons learnt on the training and playing fields."
Hampson believes that the partnerships that have been formed with KSA can be expanded moving forward.
He envisions the establishment of a hub or regional performance centre, on the back of the programmes that are currently running. "Please extend our thanks to all involved in the programmes and I look forward to the continued and growing partnerships," Hampson said.
The managing director of Kilt, Sandy Ueckermann, said Kilt is overjoyed to be able to contribute to the development of cricket in Knysna.
"We will continue to provide programmes that allow children to enjoy sports while also developing their skills for future excellence," she said.
Knysna Sports Academy's Rob Stoker said their motto is playing for the sake of the game and giving everyone an opportunity to enjoy sport. "Sport is not only how we play the game, but very much why we play it. We appreciate the recognition, and we strive to do our best at all times," he stated.
