Travelling by bus, the Epilepsy team and their supporters arrived at Abbotsfield, Rheenendal energised and ready for the challenge. Rotary was represented by a contingent of around thirty people.
"In fifteen years the RCK has been unable to wrest the trophy from the Epilepsy team and this year there was no reason to believe that the outcome would be different. New rules gave every player a guaranteed number of balls to face, regardless of the number of bales that flew, making the game more interesting and challenging for the batsmen. The exhibition bowling by Andrew Finn and Jason Gaugain suggested that they may have been part of Epilepsy’s secret weapons, " explains Peter Klews RC Knysna PR and golf sponsorship officer. "The match was extremely close between the smart, red-shirted Epilepsy team and the scraggly, motley Rotarians, and it was only by a hairbreadth that the latter won the day!"
Cricket was followed by fellowship and a delicious braai and salads prepared by Epilepsy.
"Thanks to Keith Cretchley for the use of the superb cricket pitch, to Linda and Mike Smerdon for their organisation, and of course to Epilepsy for lunch and companionship. It was indeed a pleasant day spent in the sun in lovely surroundings," said Klews.
This was the first time that the annual challenge was held at Abbotsfield, explains Klews, who felt it fitting to give a little background about this new venue. "The field is located in Rheenendal and has the charm of a typical English village venue with lots of shady trees.
It is the home of Keith Cretchley’s 'Sport at Backward Point' whose intention is to develop this and two new ones and promote the concept of village sport. This will provide playing facilities that can involve the whole family while also providing for the Knysna Sports School, which Keith Cretchley founded many years ago and which has been assisted by the Rotary Club of Knysna since. The name of the field was given by Keith Cretchley as a simple way in which he could ‘reward’ Robin Abbott for the ‘lifelong’ contribution he made to coaching cricket and the administration thereof, especially in the Border District. Later he had a long association at the Knysna Sport School as a coach of the under squads over a good number of years!"?
His father, Charles Abbot, was a Rotarian in the 1970s and president of the Rotary Club of Knysna in 1976/ '77.
