GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - In aid of dementia sufferers and to raise awareness of the condition, Alzheimer’s SA will be holding a “Race to end Alzheimer’s” (REA) from Mossel Bay to Knysna next week, when 10 runners are set to complete a total distance of 481km for this worthy cause.
The runners will make their way over four of the mountain passes that Thomas Bain is responsible for building, starting in Mossel Bay on Monday 25 September and ending at the Boardwalk in Knysna on Friday 29 September.
According to Alzheimer’s SA spokesperson Denise Fredericks the runners will collect donations along their journey that will allow the organisation to train Alzheimer's carers.
“Alzheimer’s SA in Knysna will also be joining us for the ‘end’. We hope to have banners and balloons up at the Boardwalk to raise awareness,” she said.
The team from the race held in 2015.
The route:
Day 1 - Runners will start in Mossel Bay and head to Oudtshoorn via the R328, taking them through the Robertson pass. This will be a tarred section.
Day 2 – From Oudtshoorn, via the Swartberg pass, runners will head to Prince Albert. This will take place on a gravel section.
Day 3 – Using the Meiringspoort pass the runners will head back to Oudtshoorn from Prince Albert, this time on a tarred section.
Day 4 – Runners will take on the R62 from Oudtshoorn to Uniondale, also a tarred section.
Day 5 – On the final day the runneg to Fredericks the runners should reach Knysna around 15:00.
