PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plettenberg Bay and surrounding communities will soon be able to join in the popular Parkrun action when the first Harkerville parkrun is hosted this weekend.
The Parkrun is a weekly 5km timed event which takes place around the world. These are open to everyone, free of charge, and usually takes place in pleasant parkland surroundings to encourage people of every ability to participate – from walkers and weekend warriors to serious and experienced athletes.
The launch of the Harkerville Parkrun will be on Saturday 5 May at 08:00.
“As you may be aware, the Parkrun concept has been a phenomenal success story in South Africa, with Bruce Fordyce having initially brought the concept over from the UK more than five years ago,” says Harkerville parkrun director Heather Kennedy.
There are now 136 Parkrun locations across the country, Kennedy says, and more than half-a-million registered Parkrunners in South Africa alone.
“The Knysna parkrun has been going for over three years, and now the Harkerville Parkrun will give residents of Plettenberg Bay and the surrounding communities access to a Parkrun that is closer to home.”
Kennedy says the Parkruns take place every Saturday morning at 08:00, in a park or open area, and are always 5km.
She adds that Bruce and Gill Fordyce are said to be visiting Bitou for the launch this weekend. “We also hear that a number of "Parkrun tourists" are expected from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, George, and even Johannesburg.”
The start of the Harkerville Parkun is set to be on the field opposite the Harkerville Market off the N2 between Plettenberg Bay and Knysna.
