SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - The Eden Cluster Commander, Major-General Oswald Reddy, commended the members who represented the Eden cluster as part of the Western Cape police team at the SAPS National Athletics Championship that was hosted by the Free State province recently.
The championship took place in Bloemfontein from 16 tot 22 May. The winning province of the championship was Gauteng with the Western Province in second place and Northern Cape, third.
Six SAPS athletes who represented the Western Province are attached to units in the Southern Cape. According to Captain Malcolm Pojie, Police Spokesperson for the Southern Cape, this championship is an annual event which aims to bring out the best of all SAPS athletes around the country.
Athletes who participate are earmarked to be selected for the SAPS national athletics, cross country and masters events later this year and also for the 2017 SADEC regional championships which will be hosted by another SADEC country.
The following members of the Southern Cape participated in the event:
WO A. Marias of Oudtshoorn (age group 45-49) won a gold medal in discus, silver medal in hammer throw, achieved fourth place in shotput.
Admin Clerk G Willemse of Thembalethu SAPS (age group 45-49) received the gold medal in long jump, a silver medal for triple jump and was part of the 4 x 100m relay team which came fourth.
Const Tromp of Conville Age group 19-29) received gold for javelin and two bronze medals for shot put and discus respectively.
Const Adams of Oudtshoorn SAPS (age group 19-29) competed in 1500m, 800m and 10km cross country
Const GF Jantjies of Knysna SAPS (age group 35-39) participated in the 400m, 1 500m and 8km cross country.
