KNYSNA NEWS - Forest Edge Schools recently celebrated a significant milestone as its founding pre-primary school, Stepping Stones, marked its 50th anniversary.
Established in 1976, Stepping Stones was one of the first pre-primary schools in the greater Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Sedgefield region, and has played an important role in laying the educational foundations for thousands of children over five decades.
Tribute
The golden anniversary was celebrated with a special assembly that paid tribute to the educators whose passion and dedication helped shape the school's rich history. Guests of honour included Lesley Satchel, the school's longest-serving principal, who led Stepping Stones for 25 years; Ina Thompson, who served both as teacher and principal; Trish Griffin, a much-loved long-serving teacher; and Susan Davies, who taught Grade R for 15 years and was the school's final Grade R teacher until the end of 2025.
Although Stepping Stones and its sister school, Riverwood Primary, officially made way for the launch of Forest Edge Schools in January 2026, their educational philosophy and commitment to nurturing young children remain firmly embedded in the new school's foundation.
The celebration became a nostalgic journey through five decades of memories as learners, staff and former educators browsed through photo albums dating back to the school's earliest years.
Many pupils - and even current staff members - were delighted to discover photos of their own parents and grandparents among the school's former learners, highlighting the deep roots Stepping Stones has established within the local community.
Memories
The occasion also recognised the remarkable dedication of staff members who have devoted many years to the school. Monica Simama, Susie Slabbert, Tozama Caka, Shandre Kamfer and volunteer Josie Wishart have all been part of the Stepping Stones story, with some serving local families for more than two decades.
Addressing the gathering, Satchel reflected on the school's humble beginnings in 1976, when classes were first held in the very building that today serves as Forest Edge's Grade 8 classroom. She shared stories of the school's move to Waterfront Drive before relocating to Trotter Street following plans for the town's bypass road.
Her memories, ranging from humorous anecdotes to defining milestones, painted a vivid picture of a school that has consistently produced young people characterised by curiosity, resilience, compassion and strong values.
Expanding footsteps
As Forest Edge Schools continues to grow into a leading primary and high school, the legacy of Stepping Stones will continue to guide its future. What began as tiny footsteps in a single pre-primary classroom has evolved into an institution that now confidently prepares learners from their earliest years right through to high school.
