GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - Being on holiday, even in small villages and on country roads, does not mean being less vigilant.
Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind while you enjoy your much-deserved breakaway.
At your accommodation
- Do not leave your luggage and belongings unattended.
- Ask your host where you can safely store valuables.
- Always keep your accommodation and any sliding doors or windows locked.
- Never open doors to strangers.
Safe holidaying
- Hand your keys in at reception if you plan to leave for a few hours.
- Use the main entrance of the hotel or guest house when you arrive late at night.
On the street
- Don’t use ATMs in deserted areas or on your own. Ask locals or your host which ATMs are secure.
- Determine if there are any areas that you should avoid.
- Don’t use your cellphone while walking.
- Be aware of your surroundings, stay alert and avoid alleyways and dense shrubs and bushes.
- Don’t carry large amounts of cash, rather use credit cards instead of cash.
- If you need information, ask a traffic, police or security officer or a shopkeeper.
- Avoid jogging or cycling alone and in secluded areas.
When travelling
- Tell your hosts, friends or family about your travel plans, route and expected times of arrival.
- Make sure your car is in good order and serviced.
- Don’t wait till your tank is nearly empty before filling up with petrol.
- Don’t stop or park in secluded areas.
- Be vigilant of your surroundings and go to the nearest police station or business if you are suspicious of something.
- Do not simply pull over if someone indicates that there is a problem with your vehicle. Notify the police of your situation and drive to the nearest police station to check your vehicle.
- Stick to well-known routes and avoid back streets. Don’t follow GPS directions blindly as they often direct you to avoid traffic and take you through quiet areas.
