PROPERTY NEWS - Knysna has evolved into one of South Africa's prime coastal cities in recent years, becoming a preferred location for holidays as well as a target at the top of the list when looking for property for sale on the Garden Route.
This is a far cry from the village that it was just around half a century ago, a story which some residents will be able to share with you after witnessing the incredible transformation.Town historian Margaret Parkes will happily explain to you how it would take her more than a day to travel to school in Port Elizabeth by using the train via George.
This was before the existence of the N2, South Africa's second-most important national road - and a road that is now the main street running through Knysna.Keep in mind, this road heads almost all the way to the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, while travelling in the other direction will take you into Ermelo in Mpumalanga.
Knysna's big attraction in the past was the timber, as many people made their way there after Cape Town had exhausted all of its timber.Things have changed drastically since then though, with Knysna offering the same level of modern facilities as many other major towns. You will find a range of public and private schools, hospitals, shopping malls and the stunning Knysna Waterfront.
Then, of course, there are a range of major developments which include the Country Club Estate, Thesen Islands and Pezula - which boasts its own private estate as well as the championship golf course.
Despite of all this development though, there is a unique charm about Knysna; and it can be figured out with a simple drive. No matter where the road goes, you are sure to stop at some point just to take in the spectacular scenery.
