ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - Bellville High School Symphonic Wind Band were the star performers at a concert that took place in Knysna's Dutch Reformed Church hall on Sunday afternoon 14 July.
The event was organised by Carpe Musicam, so those in the audience knew they would be truly entertained. What we didn't really know was just how talented the band is.
The music played ranged from classical composers such as Mozart to arrangements of musical treasures from the Beatles and Abba. For part of the concert, the band was joined by players of string instruments from Carpe Musicam – a very appropriate addition – as well as a sizeable contingent of wind players. The Bellville Wind Band has been playing for 30 years. They are based at Bellville High School in Cape Town and, like Carpe Musicam, one of their driving forces is to encourage scholars and other youngsters to learn to play together. They have succeeded, and applause from members of the audience was a tribute to their success. Their conductor since 2007 is Riaan Van Wyk, a flute and saxophone player since his school days.
Unfortunately, the concert was not well supported by our community and it is to be hoped that if and when the Symphonic Wind Band revisits Knysna, more people will attend what would be a memorable experience.
