Update
KNYSNA NEWS - Residents of Knysna are no strangers to the refuse collection problem that is currently plaguing the town. But, there may be light at the end of the trash tunnel as Knysna Municipality will be assisted by George Municipality and the WC Government to better manage the transport of the refuse out of Knysna.
In a press statement issued yesterday, DA Knysna caucus leader Dion George claimed that only five of the 11 refuse removal trucks in Knysna are operational, while the other six require repairs.
This has led to a growing mountain of rubbish at the town's waste transfer station just off Waterfront Drive, at the old Waste by Rail site.
"When refuse is, now sporadically, collected, it is dumped at the Waste by Rail Terminal before it is transported by road to a landfill site in Mossel Bay.
"This takes a number of the five operational trucks out of circulation for this long trip. Previously, the refuse was removed by rail until the line fell into disrepair," George said.
"After desperate pleas from the DA in Knysna, the Western Cape Government and the George Municipality have arranged to transport the growing mountain of refuse from Knysna to Mossel Bay."
According to George this rescue will be funded by the Western Cape Government.
