POLITICAL NEWS - On Sunday afternoon, 14 November, an altercation took place in the rural town Uniondale, right in front of the house of ANC ward candidate, Jarques Esau.
Esau is the only George ANC councillor who managed to retain his ward (Uniondale) during the local government elections earlier this month. It is unclear exactly what happened, and who were allegedly assaulted by whom.
ANC's acting regional secretary, Aseza Gungubele, said the party has been in touch with Esau. "He assured us that he was never arrested and no case was opened against him. He said he never assaulted anyone."
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Capt Malcolm Pojie, two cases of common assault were reported by two women, aged 53 and 66.
"These cases are currently under investigation by the detective branch," said Pojie.
"Preliminary investigation reveals that a group of local Uniondale residents met in front of the house of a local councillor where a confrontation ensued between the two parties. It is alleged that the complainants were hit in their faces by the suspects.
"No arrests have been made. The docket will be submitted to the senior public prosecutor as soon as the investigation is completed, to decide whether to prosecute or not."
