Nicci Redelinghuys, 20, took the offending selfie while she was driving on Wednesday and posted it on social media.
“So yesterday I was driving on the N3 trying to take a selfie. lol. I kept looking at the camera and forgetting to watch the road! But I guess I finally got it kind of right! I still look scared as s**t,” posted Redelinghuys.
It didn’t seem to bother the student that as many as 287 people died on South Africa’s roads during the Easter break – 94 more than over the same period last year.
“We strongly condemn irresponsible behavior of any kind by anyone on our roads,” said transport department spokesperson Nathi Sukazi.
“Such conduct that deliberately endangers the lives of other road users should not be allowed to gain ground in our society.”
Justice Project South Africa said on Twitter: “Is everyone this stupid? Don’t bother responding. It’s a rhetorical question.”
Before her Facebook account was shut down, Redelinghuys wrote: “Bitches be bitches, unfortunately some ppl don’t understand that I drive like a pro! Thanks to dad 3 times SA [rally] champ!”
