NATIONAL NEWS - A Port Elizabeth father watched helplessly as his 10-year-old son died in his arms after being shot in the back. Damian van Rooyen died at about 3.45pm on Saturday in Jupiter Street, Gelvandale.

The alleged shooter claimed he was about to be robbed by men armed with knives and fired in self-defence.

Damian was hit instead as well as a nearby dog, which also died.

The “fun-loving” Grade 4 pupil at Rufane Donkin Primary School was playing outside with friends when he was shot.

His father, Hans Magerman, 49, said they had just returned from a funeral.

“He [Damian] died in my arms. I saw the life leaving his eyes,” Magerman said.
