The idea is to expand the Gautrain link from Samrand via Irene, towards the development of a new station within the east of the capital.
This will, in all likelihood, be in the vicinity of the Woodlands Boulevard shopping centre.
Delivering his 2016 state-of-the-capital address on Thursday, Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa said it was envisaged that residents would potentially see the trains running on the new link within the next five to eight years.
“Thus making adequate provision for proper and inclusive planning,” the mayor said.
He said in order to compliment the capital city’s current public transport offering, the metro was committed to exploring the introduction of light-rail tram.
