The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by Members of Parliament (MPs) before the list is whittled down to three.
It's the job of parliament's portfolio committee on communications to recommend candidates to the president, to fill positions on the public broadcaster's board.
Members of a parliamentary sub-committee chose the nine candidates from a list of 58 this morning.
They include the former head of the NCC Mamodupi Mohlala-Mulaudzi, and Jenni Irish-Qhobosheane, once the civilian secretary for police.
Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Phumzile Van Damme wasn't happy with Irish-Qhobosheane’s nomination.
“In fact there have been allegations in the Western Cape of her in an independent position furthering an African National Congress (ANC) agenda. So, can I please appeal to this committee that we choose people that will bring stability to the SABC?”
She argued that while the rest of the candidates had impressive CVs, they lacked the requisite experience to serve on the SABC board.
Van Damme, quoting from the Broadcasting Act, said expertise in broadcasting policy and media was necessary.
There are currently six vacant seats on the board, but Parliament has only been asked to fill three.
