MOTORING NEWS - A garage is a mess-prone space, but it can easily be turned into a storage haven. Here are a few tips on how to kit out your garage.
1. Declutter
First on your to-do list should be to throw out, recycle or donate any unnecessary items in your garage. While going through this process, put the items together that you are keeping, grouping similar items together.
2. Get floored
Ah, the floor. A dingy concrete slab, but it is what it is. Dazzle up your space with epoxy floor coating, which is easy to clean (bye-bye oil spills). Make sure to clean the slab thoroughly before application, and allow adequate time to dry. A personal favourite garage flooring solution is interlocking plastic floor tiles. They’re pretty durable, and make for a beautiful, clean finish.

3. In the zone
Remember those similar items you grouped together? Now it’s time to store them in allocated zones to keep your organised garage clutter free. We’ll get to creative storage solutions in a minute, but start by deciding which groups will go where. Handy categories include gardening, tools, sports, camping gear and seasonal décor. Top tip: don’t store paint in the garage, as the low temperatures can cause paint to separate or gel.
4. Storage is key
Crates, shelves, cupboards and jars, there are many storage options to keep your garage neat. To save space, opt for shelves instead of cupboards, and place labelled, see-through containers on the shelves to easily find what you’re looking for. Running out of space? Don’t forget about the ceiling. Overhead wire racks can add loads more space. Cyclists can add a ceiling bicycle rack.
5. A splash of colour
Adding some colour will be the perfect finishing touch. Make sure to pick a durable paint, easy to clean. Why not choose an unusual colour to make the space more interesting? You can choose from greens, blues, yellows, anything your heart desires. If you prefer a clean look, opt for whites and greys, which will also make the garage look bigger.
