KNYSNA NEWS - For the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Zumba instructors and dancers from across the Garden Route were able to convene for a Zumbathon.
Every year that the Zumbathon is held, organisers select a charity to support, with the central focus often being the fight against cancer.
This year they came together in Knysna, and some of the funds raised will also go to a specific young boy from Johannesburg, Jandré Benson, who is fighting sarcoma cancer.
Titled the "Move to Give Zumbathon" this year, the event was organised by Sedgefield-based Zumba instructor Shawn van der Berg.
"I know Jandré through Zumba Kids that we've presented at the Arnold Classic Sports Festival in Johannesburg every year for the past four years. He is an active member of the Zumba Kids club in Johannesburg," Van der Berg explained.
For those unfamiliar with the Zumbathon, it is as the name implies, a marathon of Zumba with participants going for up to three hours. The "Move to Give Zumbathon" was held at the St George's Anglican Church Hall on Saturday 2 April, with instructors and dancers from across the Garden Route taking part from 09:00 until 12:00.
Participants were treated to a vast array of different routines by the various instructors who led the "class".
A mammoth R24 500 was raised to go towards Jandré's fight against sarcoma cancer.
