PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The N2 at Plettenberg Bay remains closed between Shell Ultra City and Kwanokuthula due to ongoing protest action that started in Qolweni last night.
Public order police, crowd management units from SAPS and Bitou Public Safety officials (Traffic, Law Enforcement, Fire Department) and Provincial Traffic remains on the scene.
The situation remains volatile and tense, with some residents of New Horizons also joining the protest.
In the interest of the safety of all road users, the N2 remains closed due to sporadic stone throwing and fires on the road.
In order to resolve the issues that lead to the protests, and to reopen the N2, Public Order Police management are leading attempts to get an undertaking from the protest leaders to meet with political office bearers of Bitou and the municipal manager.
Traffic in both directions is still being diverted via the Airport/Robberg road from the Knysna direction and through Plettenberg Bay town, from the Port Elizabeth direction.
A decision has also been made to close the municipal administrative offices, in the interest of safety; due to the escalation of the protest. Two councillors and three officials have meanwhile also been escorted from Pinetrees, Bossiesgif and New Horizons by Public Order Police into safety, as precautionary measure.
