KNYSNA NEWS - Ward 8 councillor Aubrey Tsengwa handed out 500 pairs of school shoes to needy children on Wednesday 26 February.
It was part of what Tsengwa said was his programme to see to the needs of those parents who were struggling to buy shoes and uniforms for their children.
Many of the people in his ward rely on government grants and they cannot afford the expense of school uniforms.
Distributed to schools
"We want to assist in helping parents meet the financial challenges they face. In this way we want to encourage young people to attend school.
"If some children don't have uniforms, it makes it difficult for them to attend school," said Tsengwa.
The shoes were distributed to Thembelitsha Primary School, Percy Mdala High School and Concordia High School.
Rugby jerseys
Tsengwa said another part of his programme in his ward is to provide rugby jerseys for Thembelitsha Primary School.
"Schools and sport are close to my heart, because without educated young people there will be no future for this country," he said.
Tsengwa also thanked all the stakeholders and ward 8 area committees, there are 16 of them, "for making my work easy".
The handing over event took place at the Masifunde Library.
Tsengwa responded to suggestions that he was "buying votes".
"We are not buying any votes. There is no election this year. I am just doing what I've been voted in to do in my community," said Tsengwa.
