KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Municipality has provided an update on the long-delayed repair of the traffic lights at the intersection of Long Street and Main Road, citing procurement issues as the cause of further delays.
"We initiated discussions with a service provider and obtained quotes for the replacement materials. While we were ready to proceed with procurement, the process was paused to ensure full compliance with supply chain procedures, as a competitive element had not been included," said Nwabisa Pondoyi, municipal communications officer.
She said they now have to restart the process.
"A site meeting has been scheduled for this week to initiate the revised process. The expected completion date will depend on the supplier ultimately appointed, as delivery times for the required materials vary."
This intersection has been without a functioning signal system since late May, forcing motorists to navigate the busy junction with caution and prompting growing frustration among residents.
Municipal Manager Lulamile Mapholoba previously announced that the system would be replaced after internal funds were reprioritised to cover the estimated R200 000 cost.
However, despite early planning and contractor discussions, full compliance with supply chain regulations has now required a fresh start to the process.
The faulty system was the last of its kind in operation in Knysna, with technicians finding that replacement parts were obsolete, leaving a full system overhaul as the only viable option. The planned upgrade includes a new control unit and 12 signal inserts.
A report submitted to the infrastructure services committee in July also raised concerns about possible tampering, and Mapholoba warned that any individuals found responsible for deliberate damage will be held financially accountable.
In the meantime, the municipality has asked residents to remain patient and cautious when approaching the intersection, assuring the public that the process is now back on track.
