PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The swift and efficient response of various role players saw a disaster averted when a wildfire broke out in Plettenberg Bay on Sunday 23 January.
The fire, which created large plumes of smoke seen across town, was raging near Kwanokuthula on Sunday afternoon.
Various firefighting bodies including the Garden Route District Municipality and Bitou fire department reacted swiftly with teams on the ground and aerial support.
Two bomber planes and a helicopter that were activated through the Western Cape government water-bombed the area.
Local residents and businesses also jumped in to provide support to the crews battling the blaze after the Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) launched a collection drive for water, electrolyte drinks, Vaseline, chocolates, fruit and wet wipes, among others.

Bitou municipal spokesperson Andile Namntu said the fire was brought under control early on Sunday evening. This was followed by mopping-up operations and monitoring in case of flare-ups.
Namntu said the swift action by all role players ensured that no property or human life was threatened.
He said the municipality's public safety department generally ascribed the fire to the adverse weather conditions, dry and very hot.
