PLETTENBER BAY NEWS - While it is the duty of the police to protect and serve, Plettenberg Bay police went beyond the call of duty on Mandela Day.
Local police members, along with local library staff and Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV) personnel, spent their time during the annual 67 Minutes for Mandela international drive on Nelson Mandela's birthday on 18 July, by taking care of the elderly at the New Horizons Pensioners Club last week.
Police spokesperson Captain Marlene Pieterse said Captain Gail Andrews from the police's employee health and wealth department shared her knowledge about coping with the ups and downs of life while Elricia Breda entertained them with music and song.
Captain Jacky Eksteen also provided some information on safety and security and emphasised the importance of locking their doors and reporting crime.
Apart from receiving warm hugs, the senior citizens were also given some knitted socks by the ATKV to keep the winter chill out while police members gave them sweet treats.
