PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - A 39-year-old man is expected to appear in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court tomorrow, Friday 17 December, after he was found in possession of a suspected illegal firearm and ammunition.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies said the arrest, which was made yesterday evening, Wednesday 15 December, was part of safer festive season operations.
The Eden Cluster Crime Combatting Team was conducting a vehicle check on the N2 near the Tsitsikamma Toll Plaza at 22:45.
“The officers stopped a Nissan Livinia and proceeded with a search of the vehicle when they found a 9mm pistol and five rounds of ammunition in the possession of the driver. He was unable to account for his possession thereof and was arrested,” Spies said.
“He is facing charges of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.”
The suspect remains in custody.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieut-Gen Thembisile Patekile, commended the officers.
“These crime combatting operations aimed at ridding communities of illicit firearms and drugs will continue throughout the festive season period, because it threatens the safety of communities,” Patekile said.
