KNYSNA NEWS - If you spot a unicorn, a fairy and a dinosaur running into the ocean at the crack of dawn on Friday 1 September, rest assured that you are not losing your mind, nor will it be the start of a corny joke.
These mythical or extinct creatures will be prominent Plettenberg Bay residents in costume raising funds for the town's crime prevention association (PBCPA) – a nonprofit organisation whose volunteers give up their time, and more often than not dig into their own pockets, in an attempt to keep residents and visitors safe.
Local Pascalette Quirk has a long-standing tradition of hosting a "sunrise ocean dip" on the first of every month on Central Beach.
Quirk agreed to share the tradition with the PBCPA in an attempt to raise funds for the organisation. Its operations head Otto Olivier said they are trying to raise funds for a dedicated PBCPA vehicle in Plett.
"At the moment volunteers respond, but after they are done they have to return to work and more often than not the suspects are still at large and there is more work that could be done. We would like to employ someone to be out there when volunteers can't," Olivier said.
Any resident, visitor or group can sponsor a PBCPA member or nominated person by depositing R1 000 into the PBCPA bank account. They then have the power to dictate the person's dress code for the event.
Several residents have also already made themselves available for this entertaining endeavour, including deputy mayor Jessica Kamkam, CrossFit Plett box owner Donald Ravenscroft, restaurant owner Denise McNamara and all PBCPA executives and some members.
The ocean dip will take place on September 1 at 06:00 on Central Beach. Those who would like to make a contribution can do so by depositing funds into the organisation's bank account: BMERC NPC, Standard Bank, Account number 251989976, deposit reference – your choice/your name 1st Sept.
