KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Municipality has reacted to complaints about stray animals causing havoc in residential yards and gardens, saying that there are definite measures in place to combat this situation.
This came in reply to Ian Swart of Rio Street in Knysna Heights, who said roaming animals are a big problem that seems to be completely ignored by the Knysna municipality.
"I would like to know what the plan is to solve this problem. The problem isn't just a question of not liking the animals. The destruction and danger caused by free-roaming animals is a real problem. They are in front of my house almost every day. Please, the municipality should remove them, impound and ensure they don't return," Swart said.
Municipal measures
Municipal communications manager Christopher Bezuidenhout said it is "inaccurate" to say that the municipality is unwilling or neglecting to take action regarding this issue.
He said municipal law enforcement officers are deployed daily to manage this particular issue, and they have a dedicated stand-by officer who frequently works after hours to respond promptly to complaints and ensure the safe removal of stray animals.
It has to be noted however that there are "financial and resource challenges which impacts [the municipality's] ability to respond to all complaints simultaneously", Bezuidenhout said. "Where the owners of these animals are known, our officers make direct contact to remove their livestock off the streets."
"In addition, fines are issued as a measure to encourage responsible ownership.
"Currently, the fine for owners whose animals are found roaming freely is R1 000.
"While we do not impound animals at this time, should this practice be implemented in the future, owners would be responsible for transportation costs, holding fees, and release fees in co-ordination with the George SPCA." He said the municipality remains committed to addressing the matter effectively and sustainably. "In line with this commitment, we are actively engaging with relevant authorities to secure land for commonage and for small-scale farmers.
A constructive meeting was held on 14 May 2025 with local small farmers to discuss these initiatives and explore solutions collaboratively."
