PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The freezing water along the Plettenberg Bay coast did not deter a group of diehards who not only ran into the ocean at the crack of dawn to raise funds for a worthy cause, but did so in less than ideal attire.
While this might sound crazy for the average person, this was part of the second Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) Spring Day fundraising initiative.
How it worked was that any resident, visitor or group had the opportunity to sponsor a PBCPA member or nominated person by depositing R1 000 into the PBCPA’s bank account. They then had the power to dictate the person’s dress code for the event.
And the choices did not disappoint. The costumes ranged between anything from pirates and Great Gatsby drag queens to unicorns and revealing Swat team members.
“The water was freezing, but the atmosphere was fantastic and everyone had fun,” said PBCPA operations head Otto Olivier.
About 30 swimmers dashed into the ocean on Central Beach as the sun began to rear its head. Olivier said while they are still busy calculating the finally tally, about R20 000 was raised.
