KNYSNA NEWS - With cooler weather fast creeping upon us, so will Knysna's snakes slither away getting ready to hibernate for the winter.
Despite concerns that this year snakes would be more prevalent in areas they have not frequented before owing to the fires and supposedly fewer food sources such as rodents, there has been similar activity this year to last year.
Knysna protection services have a dedicated snake-catching team for the summer and according to this department, "between September 2017 and February 2018, emergency services responded to a total of 86 call-outs in Greater Knysna – this figure being more or less the same as last year".
Apparently the team mainly caught boomslang and on a rare occasion a puff adder.
"The majority of snakes were found in the gardens or in residential areas that are close to open spaces and a few inside homes," said the municipality.
All snakes caught are released in a safe area away from human activity.
Four snakes were caught in Rexford, 10 in Hunters Home, three in Knysna Heights, six in Welbedacht, seven in Eastford, seven in Phantom Pass, seven in Old Place, one in Thembeni, six in Lake Brenton, three in Brenton-on-Sea, one in White Location, three in Leisure Isle, one in Khayalethu, two in Fisher Haven, one in Sparrebosch, one in Westford Bridge, four in the CBD, 11 in Hornlee, two in Belvedere, one on the Heads, one in Simola, three in Green Pastures and one in Rheenendal.
