KNYSNA NEWS - Motorists are complaining about a work site in the middle of Rawson Street, at the intersection of Rawson and Mortimer streets, which they say poses a threat to drivers and pedestrians.
Work at the site in the Knysna CBD had been unfinished for months, and two yellow plastic barriers, that had initially been placed on either side of the site, had been knocked over repeatedly by vehicles, partly due to the site and the barriers narrowing Rawson Street at the intersection.
'Barrier hit by vehicle'
Over the past week only one of the barriers has been in place at the site, as one of them has been placed on the pavement, apparently after being hit by a vehicle.
Motorists enter Rawson Street from the northern side of Mortimer Street, in the face of east-bound and west-bound traffic along Rawson Street.
'Traffic build-ups'
According to Knysna motorists the barrier/s and the work site - where the tar surface around a manhole has been excavated - cause greater traffic build-ups at the intersection during peak traffic hours, increasing risk to drivers and pedestrians at these times.
In response to a query, the municipality said: "The municipality's Project Management Unit is currently coordinating with the appointed contractor to finalise the necessary project plan for this site.
'Will cover excavated patch'
"In the interim, we will cover the excavated patch and remove the road sign and barrier until the contractor is ready to commence work.
"We appreciate the patience of motorists and pedestrians and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
"Further updates on the repair timeline will be provided as soon as they become available."
