KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Municipal Council has resolved to use the remainder of Erf 1343 (Milkwood Flats) as a temporary homeless shelter.
According to Mayor Thando Matika, the proposed use of the property will now be advertised for public comment in accordance with the applicable public participation processes.
Council had also mandated the administration to initiate the necessary land use application processes to facilitate the establishment of the temporary shelter.
“This decision marks a significant step towards addressing homelessness in the Greater Knysna area while longer-term solutions are being implemented,” said Matika.
He said earlier this month, Council had approved the 2026/27 annual budget, which included R2.8m for the construction of a permanent homeless shelter. “Homelessness is a complex social challenge that requires compassion, practical interventions and strong partnerships.
Council’s decision creates a pathway for immediate relief while we continue working towards a permanent facility that can provide dignity, support and opportunities for those living on the margins of society,” he said.
Matika added that the municipality remained committed to engaging with residents and stakeholders throughout the public participation process.
“We realise sustainable solutions require the involvement of the broader community. This resolution demonstrates Council’s determination to move from planning to implementation while ensuring that all statutory processes are followed,” he said.
He said the details of the public participation process would be made available once the required notices have been published.
