KNYSNA NEWS - Cancer is the fifth leading cause of death in South Africa, according to the Cancer Association of South Africa.
Furthermore, it is predicted that by 2050 one in 15 premature deaths among people below the age of 75 will be due to cancer-related illnesses, says the Rotary Club of Knysna.
Risk factors such as family history, tobacco and harmful alcohol use, a sedentary lifestyle, exposure to harmful UV sun rays and pollution are just a few causes of cancer.
Affecting young, old
The Rotary Club of Knysna said as this illness knows no boundaries, affecting young and old, it has joined other institutions and organisations in South Africa in a fundraising and awareness campaign, the Shavathon.
Although the cause is serious, the element of fun, that of paying to have one's hair sprayed all the colours of the rainbow, to have one's hair cut or be clean shaven, draws the most daring supporters.
Helping sufferers
The not-so-brave donate what they can afford. All to help sufferers navigate the challenges which lie ahead.
Monies raised are used to support CANSA's services, such as screening tests, early detection and intervention initiatives and the identification of at-risk individuals, among others.
Getting a fresh look
On Saturday 22 February, Rotarians, Rotary Anns and friends gathered at the Waterfront, Knysna, for the first leg of the three-week campaign, spraying, cutting and shaving willing supporters.
German visitors
"Even a group of German visitors dared each other to join in - maybe the idea could be implemented in Germany as well! Others supported in memory of a friend or family member who had passed away from cancer," Knysna Rotary said.
On Saturday 1 March the Salt and Petal restaurant hosted the second leg of the Shavathon, and despite light rain, residents got into the spirit and helped raise necessary funds.
Final leg of campaign
"Knysnarites are invited to the final leg of the campaign, to be held at Knysna Mall on Saturday morning, 8 March, to assist, be sprayed, shaved or to have their hair cut. All in order to keep hope in sight.
"We have raised R15 000 so far - we're halfway to our goal! The mall (event) is an attempt to raise the rest of the funds. Come join in the fun!
"Many thanks to everyone who has hosted us. Salt and Petal, Knysna Waterfront, and now the Knysna Mall.
"Help us by considering to donate in any form possible," Knysna Rotary said.
