KNYSNA NEWS - About 20 security guards are planning to picket at Knysna Hospital on Wednesday next week after their contracts were allegedly not renewed by a security company.
Five of the security guards, representing the group, said the security company took over a Western Cape Government contract to provide security at sites including Knysna Hospital, Knysna Community Day Care Centre, and the Kwanokuthula Clinic in Plettenberg Bay, from another security firm, under which they had worked for periods ranging from six months to seven years.
The guards claim they had been told that their contracts would be taken over and extended by the new company, but that failed to materialise after an employee of the company allegedly asked the guards individually to each pay him R1 500 for contract extensions.
The five guards claim that all 20 refused to pay the money, allegedly intended “for his personal gain”.
Comment from the Western Cape government, the security company in question and Knysna Hospital is being sought, and when received, will be published.
