PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - A second fire within three days in Bossiesgif has destroyed about 20 homes.
The fire started shortly after 01:00 this morning, Thursday 7 August. According to Bitou Municipality's communications manager, Andile Namntu, the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
There were no fatalities or injuries and initial estimates are that about 48 people were affected.
“We are working on establishing the final details,” says Namntu.
Bitou fire services managed to contain the fire within an hour and humanitarian relief is being provided.
First fire
In the early hours of Monday morning, a fire in Bossiesgif destroyed 165 houses, affecting between 400 and 500 people.
Relief operations are continuing unabated as volunteer groups, including the Dignity Fund and Gift of the Givers, provide relief to both Monday’s and today’s fire victims.
Mario Ferreira of Gift of the givers said the organisation provided essential items such as blankets, mattresses, food parcels, hygiene packs, toiletries and nappies.
Ferreira said since Monday, the community has been intensely involved in providing relief.
Gift of the Givers, in conjunction with Shoprite Checkers, has also organised soup kitchens.
Volunteers
Cindy Truyens, responsible for housing and food provision by the Dignity Fund, also notes the overwhelming community support in bringing relief to the fire victims. When they put out a call for more volunteer to assist, the response has been brilliant, she says, and the Dignity Fund is thankfully in a position to absorb the extra people affected by the latest fire.
