KNYSNA NEWS- Police divers are currently searching for the body of a boy in the Knysna Estuary, whose canoe is believed to have capsized while fishing earlier this afternoon.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, the boy was on his own on the canoe in the Ashmead Channel.
Spies confirmed that shortly before 16:00 the canoe from which the boy was fishing capsized and the boy "disappeared underwater".
Reports indicate that someone spotted what had happened and then tried to reach the boy, but was unable to do so in time, and began shouting for help, at which point a bystander alerted the authorities.
This led to National Sea Rescue Institute, WC Metro EMS, SANParks and the police dive unit all responding to the scene.
A search began immediately, but the boy's body was not found and the rescue was turned into a search and recovery, however the person who attempted to save the boy was rescued and transported to hospital. Spies confirmed that police divers are currently in the Knysna Estuary at the Ashmead Channel attempting to recover the boy's body.
