GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities, and is still applied today when a new vessel is put to sea.
The practice of getting a blessing from the local priest and pastors to ensure a safe and bountiful season began as a predominantly Catholic ceremony, but is now practised by all Christians.
Nowadays it takes the form of a celebration, along with the blessing and naming, plus champagne poured over the vessel.
Some advice when someone gets a new boat:
"Say a few words - welcome your guests, thank everyone for joining, share the name of your boat.
Read the traditional christening ceremony poem with toasts included.
"Lay a branch of green leaves on the deck. Break your pre-scored champagne bottle with containment bag."
Some quaint blessings over the years:
- May God bless her and all who sail in her.
- Home is where the anchor drops.
- God is the wind. Faith is the sail. You are the vessel. May you be blessed with smooth sailing.
- Don't let what's happening around you get inside you and weigh you down.
- The man who has experienced shipwreck, shudders even at a calm sea.
- Let your dreams set sail.
- Don't put each foot in a different boat.
- Remember when you were my boat and I was your sea?
