KNYSNA NEWS - Currently, there are approximately 10 000 babies abandoned in South Africa each year, and tragically, most of these babies are not found alive, according to the team at Thando House Baby Rescue Haven, a wing of the Knysna Vineyard Church in Lower Old Place.
"These statistics reflect only the cases we know about," the team said.
"We were saddened to hear about the desperate mother who left her 3-day-old baby girl abandoned near the N2 close to Plettenberg Bay. These statistics, along with this incident happening so close to home, highlight the urgent need in our community to support desperate mothers rather than condemn them.
"At Thando House, we believe that children should be raised within families. Unfortunately, for various reasons, it isn't always possible for a child to grow up in their own family.
'Adoption: a loving act'
"Adoption can be a loving act by caring parents to ensure that children have a nurturing home.
"Since our first adoption at Thando House on 28 May this year, we have experienced more adoptions and reunifications, reinforcing our commitment to being a vital part of the adoption process for these beautiful babies. Each successful adoption not only changes a child's life but also fills a family with joy, love, and hope.
"While Thando House does not manage the adoption process directly, we collaborate with various registered social workers who ensure that every child finds a safe and nurturing home.
'Forever homes'
"Thando House is privileged to offer a safe haven, providing care and love to these vulnerable infants while they await their forever homes. We also care for babies for a temporary period in cases where a child's home environment needs to be investigated.

"Being an integral part of the community that nurtures these babies is an incredible honour for everyone involved at Thando House. Our mission extends beyond temporary care; we aim to create sustainable change for these children and their new families.
'Future success'
"While the children in our care might not remember their time with us, as they are between the ages of 0 and 2 years, we trust that the love, care, and nurturing they receive will set them up for future success.
"We invite anyone interested in partnering with Thando House to visit our website at https://www.thandohouse.co.za/ for more information on how to get involved.
'Tax deductible'
"As a recognised Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), Thando House Baby Rescue Haven can issue 18A certificates for tax benefits, making support for our cause not only rewarding but also tax deductible.
"To stay updated on our inspiring journey and the lives we are touching, follow Thando House on Facebook and Instagram. The organisation is eager to share developments and stories that highlight the transformative impact of our work.
'Compassionate work'
"As we read distressing reports of babies being abandoned, we can only hope that more mothers learn about the compassionate work being done at Thando House and understand that they have options. It is our hope that they will seek counselling, enabling them to find the best solutions for their unique situations." - Supplied
