KNYSNA NEWS - Investigations have been launched after two learners in Sedgefield discovered unidentified pills in their packets of chips when opening them.
Subsequently, just short of 395 packets of the product have been confiscated.
Sedgefield Primary School principal Johan Nel said the two learners had bought the chips at a Smutsville shop on 22 November, and when they opened the packets at school, they found pills among the contents.
"They immediately brought the packets with the pills to me," Nel said.
He added that neither learner ate any of the chips and both children's parents were informed.
Nel said that the learners had done nothing wrong, and the police were immediately informed.
'Police took statement'
"Police came to the school and took a statement from me and the two learners."
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies confirmed the incident, and said police had launched an investigation.
'Substance being analysed'
He added that police were analysing the substance found among the chips to determine what it was.
"We would like to warn the public to be on the lookout for any foreign objects in chips and to refrain from consuming them. Report the discovery to your local police immediately," Spies said.
'GRDM investigating'
Knysna acting municipal manager Phaahle Simon Malepeng said law enforcement officers subsequently confiscated about 395 packets of chips.
"The matter was reported to the police and the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM). GRDM is currently investigating the incident," Malepeng said.
He added that the municipality's role alongside relevant authorities, including police and the GRDM, was to ensure that the incident was thoroughly investigated and necessary steps taken to safeguard the public's health and safety.
"We are closely monitoring the progress of the investigation and will provide further updates as they become available."
Spokesperson for the GRDM, Herman Pieters, said when foreign substances were found in food either the police or the GRDM should be immediately informed.
