KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna police are investigating a case of a burglary after a former ward councillor's office and Youth Centre building, which was until recently utilised by the neighbourhood watch and Community Works Programme (CWP), was vandalised in Rheenendal.
No one has been arrested.
The municipal building was stripped of ablution and kitchen facilities, doors, furniture, electric cables and a telephone. Windows were also broken.
Ward 5 Councillor Hilton Stroebel confirmed that he opened a case with Knysna police after a recent visit to the area.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said Knysna detectives are investigating the burglary after it was reported on 7 January. "Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation," he said.
Stroebel said the building was exposed to decay and vandalism by both natural and criminal elements after being underutilised for some time.
"Our community needs to stop vandalising property, especially municipal buildings, which are made to serve them. They need to look after these structures," he said.
"I trust that the law will take its course and bring those responsible to book." Spies requested anyone with information about the incident or who could assist to bring the perpetrators to book to contact the investigation officer, Sergeant Donovan Solomons, on 044 302 6652.
