Update
SEDGEFIELD NEWS - Knysna police have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving following a serious road accident on the N2 highway just outside Sedgefield on Monday afternoon.
The collision occurred at around 15:30 and involved three vehicles.
According to Southern Cape police communications officer Sergeant Chris Spies, police and emergency services were dispatched to the scene as soon as reports of the crash were received.
"Upon arrival, officers found that three vehicles had collided. One passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital for further medical attention," Spies confirmed.
Live footage
Knysna-Plett Herald received live footage of the accident from a reader on Tuesday 27 May, the day after the accident. The video, marked "Not for sensitive viewers" on the KPH Facebook page, quickly gained traction and sparked widespread discussion.
The footage shows a bakkie accelerating past a truck that was driving in the yellow lane. Just as the bakkie pulls ahead, it is suddenly struck by an oncoming vehicle that appears to be overtaking.
That vehicle then collides with another car, which in turn veers into the truck.
Opinion among viewers
The video prompted divided opinions among viewers. Some felt that vehicles on highways often travel below the required 100km/h, creating dangerous situations due to frustrated drivers trying to overtake.
Others highlighted the overcast weather and wet road conditions as contributing factors in the crash.
One reader commented:
"As a survivor of a high-speed head-on collision involving a drunk driver, I personally believe it's important to show the public how easily accidents can happen. Just one moment of poor judgment or loss of concentration can lead to tragedy. Young people, especially, could learn from others' mistakes. To those injured, wishing you a strong recovery. It takes time."
