KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Police made a substantial number of arrests during the weekend.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, crime prevention operations aimed to curb serious and violent crimes as well as substance abuse, resulted in the arrest of 35 suspects for various offences in Knysna.
"The operations were conducted in conjunction with Provincial Traffic and Municipal Law enforcement and these forces were strategically deployed in crime hotspots. These operations included closing of illegal liquor and drug outlets, stop-and-search operations as well as vehicle checkpoints," he said.
Spies said efforts to eradicate substance abuse resulted in the arrest of six suspects after small amounts of drugs were found in their possession.
"Police confiscated small amounts of Mandrax, dagga and magic mushrooms during these arrests. Road safety operations led to the arrest of five suspects for driving under the influence," he said.
Eight suspects were also found with dangerous weapons in their possession.
"These suspects were all arrested and the weapons confiscated," Spies said.
He said one person was arrested for assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm, two for theft, one for housebreaking, two for shoplifting and one for possession of stolen property.
"All the other suspects were arrested for minor offences. All suspects will appear in the Knysna Magistrate's Court once charged," he said.
