PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Wondering what to do with the old Nokia 5110 in the bottom drawer or the broken television set taking up space in the garage?
Plettenberg Bay will be hosting an electronic waste drive this coming weekend to help residents get rid of their electronic waste in a responsible manner and to ensure these items do not end up on a landfill.
The drive is a collaborative effort between the Keep Plett Clean campaign, Bitou Municipality, and LG E-waste specialists. Residents can bring their e-waste to the parking area at the Piesang Valley Hall on Saturday 4 September between 09:00 and 14:00.
The Keep Plett Clean campaign team said residents can bring anything that is powered by electricity or batteries including cellphones, printers, fridges, tumble dryers, televisions, computers, laptops, kettles, toasters, hairdryers, tools, leads and batteries. Globes will be taken at a small fee and no hazardous chemical waste will be allowed.
Residents are urged to bring along a piece of paper with their names, contact details and a list of the goods they are dropping off. A small voluntary donation on the day will be welcomed to cover costs.
According to the World Health Organisation, e-waste volumes are surging globally. The Global E-waste Statistics Partnership (GESP) reported that e-waste grew by 21% in the five years up to 2019 when 53,6-million metric tons of e-waste was generated.
Only 17,4% of e-waste produced in 2019 reached formal management or recycling facilities.
The responsible handling of electronic waste is needed to protect the environment and reduce climate emissions. The GESP estimates that the 17,4% of e-waste collected and appropriately recycled prevented as much as 15-million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents from being released into the environment.
