PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Double tragedy struck when two separate fires swept through local informal settlements over last weekend, claiming two lives and leaving more than 50 homeless.
The Bitou Municipality said the first incident happened during the early hours of Saturday morning. A fire engulfed five informal homes in Qolweni, leaving about 20 people homeless. "Sadly, two people lost their lives in the incident," municipal spokesperson Andile Namntu said.
During the early hours of Sunday morning another fire broke out in the Zawa Zawa informal settlement in Kurland. It left 19 homes gutted in its wake, and more than 35 residents destitute.
Nanmtu said that in both cases, the Bitou disaster management, fire department and human settlements department responded to the incidents.
"A special word of appreciation must also go out to all other voluntary emergency groups and members of the community who work tirelessly during these fire incidents. We also appreciate those that donate generously to the affected during such traumatic ordeals."
Humanitarian relief efforts for Qolweni and Kurland fire victims.
Bitou human settlements manager Mamoeketsi Khetsi reported that material to rebuild the shacks will be distributed to the affected residents this week. Until then, they are being provided with interim humanitarian relief.
The cause of the fires has not been established yet.
Ward 1 Councillor Jessica Kamkam, mayoral committee member Monica Seyisi and Bitou municipal officials were among those who spearheaded relief efforts.
"Stakeholders such as the Ubuntu Women Support group, an NGO from the Crags, are also very involved in the relief efforts. Various members of the community have also come forward with donations to assist," Namntu said. Others include Muddy Pooches and Native. "All other community-based organisations and private donors are also appreciated for their contributions."
The fire victims are given humanitarian relief.
