PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Easter weekend in Plettenberg Bay has long been synonymous with the Plett Easter Sports Tournament hosted by Bitou's mayor every year.
After a Covid-induced absence of two years, there is much anticipation for this year's event, hosted for the first time by the current mayor, Dave Swart.
The event will however take place later in the year than usual.
"The lifting of some of the lockdown regulations earlier this month opened up doors for sporting events such as these to be held," said municipal spokesperson Andile Namntu.
"The Bitou Municipality immediately explored the chances to bring back this annual event.
"However, the chances of this happening for this Easter season are not possible due to various unforeseen circumstances. This is very unfortunate and we do apologise to all the sports enthusiasts that were looking forward to the Easter Sports Tournament this month."
The municipality had decided to host sporting festivities throughout June.
This will include various sport codes such as soccer, rugby, the mayoral golf tournament and many other events.
"This will be linked to the fact that June is regarded as Youth Month and through these festivities, we will also create a platform for various other youth-related programmes and events to link into the sports extravaganza."
Swart said that despite the fact that the tournament is not being held over Easter, the municipality expects a boost to tourism and business sectors because of tourists flocking to our town over this long weekend.
"Our focus should not only be on those that will be staying over for the long weekend, but also to give those that will drive through our town to their different destinations a taste of the Plett feeling.
"Remember, first impressions are important and that first contact can create a loyal tourist to Plettenberg Bay in the future," Swart said.
"We also give assurance that Bitou Municipality will continue with its efforts to deliver quality services to all our residents and visitors throughout this period.
"Our service delivery teams are ready and will be on duty throughout the Easter weekend."
