KNYSNA NEWS - National delays in the payment of SASSA grants have been ongoing since Tuesday 5 September due to a system issue.
The payment delays have caused many elderly Knysna residents who rely on the SASSA grants to travel early every morning from Tuesday 5 September to Thursday 7 September to the Knysna Post Office in hopes of their grants being paid out at the post office cashier.
Reports indicate that only a few beneficiaries have received their grants, while a significant number are still waiting.
Frustrated residents from surrounding areas of Knysna, including Sedgefield, have also travelled to the post office but have been unable to withdraw their grants, despite being told that the money is available.
“From Tuesday onwards the elderly have been walking to the post office very early just to stand in line. There are old people here who are sick who have been queueing for hours and haven’t been helped yet. A number of people have not been paid out yet and very few have their grants paid out.” says Anneline Janklaas, a SASSA beneficiary.
On Wednesday, 6 September, SASSA issued an official statement stating that the technical issues with the payment cards had been resolved. They advised beneficiaries to utilise alternative payment methods offered by various banks or retailers.
However, many beneficiaries continue to experience difficulties in withdrawing cash the day there after. SASSA representatives have not yet provided an update on the extended delay.
The ongoing payment delays have caused great hardship for SASSA beneficiaries in Knysna, forcing them to endure long queues and uncertainty about when they will receive their grants.
