KNYSNA NEWS - The 42nd Knysna Oyster Festival delivered 10 days of celebration as the town came alive with a feast of oysters, thrilling sporting events and lively entertainment. From 4 to 13 July, locals and visitors embraced the festival’s spirited theme, “It’s time to come out of your shell!”.
Mayor Thando Matika said that the past 10 days have been a whirlwind. “It was a celebration of sport, food, family, community and everything that makes Knysna so special," he said.
"From the forest trails where marathon runners pushed their limits, to the rugby fields and netball courts where community spirit and friendly rivalry reigned, to the winding roads taken on by thousands of cyclists, and of course, to the cheerful clink of glasses over oysters and bubbly – this festival once again proved why it holds such a special place in South Africa’s heart.”
Over 6 200 runners took part in the Knysna Forest Marathon, while the Cycle Tour saw 30% growth in entries, thanks to new events like the Crit and Enduro races.
The Oyster Cooking and Shucking competitions, presented by Stella Artois, remained crowd favourites.
“The much-anticipated event did not disappoint as one of the gourmet highlights on the programme," said Matika.
He said that the Festival Hub at the Knysna High School sports grounds was a highlight. “It had a wonderful family-centric atmosphere, and the kids loved the inflatables, puppet workshops, clay art, and a Wildlife Warriors zone.” Other highlights included the Eden Classic Car Show, golf and soccer tournaments, and the scenic Sunset Run & Walk.
SA Army band
A standout at this year’s festival was the SA Army Band, whose vibrant performances across Knysna and at the closing ceremony added rhythm and spirit. Sergeant Major Dane Andrews said the band was honoured to be part of the event and especially valued the chance to run music workshops for local youth and adults.
Boosting the local economy
Created to energise Knysna’s winter economy, the festival also supported local businesses through the Neighbourhood Makers Tent, powered by Standard Bank.
With over R18m in combined editorial and social media exposure, the festival proved a powerful tourism and marketing tool.
Dates for the next Knysna Oyster Festival have been confirmed as 3 to 12 July 2026. Make sure to book your accommodation early and come out of your shell in Knysna!
