KNYSNA NEWS & VIDEO - Comments and requests made by Knysna Mayor Ndodi Aubrey Tsengwa in a now-viral video relating to the taxi strike in Knysna, have sparked outrage among social media users.
The video, which was posted on Knysna Municipality's Facebook page last night, 8 August, has since reached nearly 3 000 views and garnered 164 comments on the post – the bulk of which were not happy.
According to the mayor's address in the video, the municipality had engaged in a meeting with the Knysna Taxi Forum in a bid to find remedial measures to deal with the ongoing taxi unrest in Knysna. Tsengwa stated that he was pleased with the engagements, and listed prescriptions that were set out by the taxi forum that the public was expected to adhere to for the duration of the strike.
However, the public and social media users did not take kindly to what was laid out. One of the most hotly contested issues was regarding the use of a person's private vehicle for the transport of others.
Tsengwa and Deputy Mayor Alberto Marbi explained that the taxi forum has stipulated that people may not use their private vehicles as taxis without the necessary permit.
The burning question on most commenters' lips was how they could differentiate between people simply receiving a lift from a friend and/or family member, and someone using a private vehicle as a taxi.

A request for comment was sent to the municipality, but due to the Women's Day public holiday on 9 August, the municipal communications team could not guarantee feedback from the mayor before publishing.
